Master of Science (MSc) in International Transportation Planning and Logistics Management is offered jointly by Dalian Maritime University (DMU) of China, and by CINEC Maritime Campus of Sri Lanka.

1.         Course content

The first year course provides the student knowledge in theoretical, technical, legal and managerial aspects of the subject. This course provides the student a solid subject base foundation in transportation planning and logistics management.
The second year course provides the student, first, a brief introduction to Chinese language and culture that are considered essential in the present world of expanding international trade and shipping and sea-transport activities and, second, the techniques of scientific writing and defending a MSc dissertation that he/she has drafted at a viva.

2.         Course outcome

This course prepares the student for a management career in fields including in Aviation, Shipping, Freight Forwarding, Logistics and in Foreign trade (Import and Export) sector activities. This course prepares the student also for activities related with Seaport and Airports Administration and Transport-Research.

Those who have been successful in securing MSc in Transport Planning and Logistics Management are able to apply for managerial and executive positions in fields as following:

  • Logistic companies
  • International transportation
  • Shipping and sea-transport companies
  • Freight forwarding companies
  • Cargo surveying
  • Logistics/transport consultancy and research organisations
  • Public transportation
  • Transport and Logistics Research organisations 
  • Airports and seaports

Over the past decades, the volume of global trade has increased at the same time as a number of new trade destinations have been established. This development takes place at the same time as new port-hubs and commercial hubs are being established whilst the existing hubs are being restructured and expanded.

Thus the potentials for new employment opportunities in the fields of transportation and logistics are growing rapidly, as never before, in particular in South (in particular in Sri Lanka and India), East (in particular in China) and Southeast Asian region (in particular in ASEAN region countries) where international trade grows at a faster rate than anywhere else.

3.         Duration of the course and fees

The duration of the MSc programme is two years. The registered students are required to complete the degree at most within four years.

  • Registration fee: USD 250
  • Course fee: USD 4,950 (can be paid in quarterly instalments free of interest - USD 1,237.50x4 = 4,950)
  • Examination fee: USD 100 per semester (100x2 = 200)
  • Dissertation Supervision:  USD 200
  • Total Fee in USD = 250 + 4950 + 200 + 200 = 5600

4.         Entry requirements for the course:

  • Successfully completed bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution of learning
  • Highest grade certificate of competency for unrestricted service as Master Mariner or Chief Engineer or
  • Advanced Diploma in Logistics and Transport offered by the CILT International, UK
  • Qualifications that correspond with Level Six (6) of UK NQF (National Qualification Framework of the UK)

5.         Date of Enrolment

  • Next intake is underway and the classes commence on 2 August 2010
